Grewal, in a statement about charges filed against Jaquan A. Suber said:
“Fort Lee Police responded to 485 Summit Avenue on two occasions on Sunday [Sept. 3]. First, at approximately 6 a.m., [they] were summoned to a landlord/tenant dispute at 485 Summit Avenue involving Suber, who lived in the basement apartment, and his landlord, who lived on the first floor. The dispute was resolved and the officers left the home.
“Thereafter, at approximately 10:33 a.m., different Fort Lee Police officers responded to 485 Summit Avenue in connection with a missing person’s report. While at the house, the officers were directed to Suber’s basement apartment to follow-up on the earlier landlord/ tenant dispute.
“Thereafter, a confrontation ensued and Suber was shot by Fort Lee Police officers and subsequently arrested.”
Suber remained in critical condition at Hackensack University Medical Center, the prosecutor said.
He is charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses for a gun that Grewal said he wielded during the confrontation.
As with all police shootings, the prosecutor is reviewing the incident under guidelines established by New Jersey’s attorney general’s office:

Under the directive, Grewal said, his office “is prohibited from sharing any investigative details concerning the shooting at this time, as the release of such information may, among other things, ‘contaminat[e] a witness's personal recollection of events’ surrounding this matter.”
