Officer Christopher Finn was at the door of a driver he’d stopped for speeding on the parkway’s northbound side about 9:20 a.m. when the mini-van struck the left guard rail and rear-ended his police cruiser, Lt. Michael Coppola said.
The patrol car then smashed into the stopped vehicle, hitting Finn in the leg and throwing him over the guard rail onto the road shoulder, the lieutenant said.
“Miraculously he was not injured other than being shaken up,” Copolla said.
The driver of the car that Finn pulled over refused medical treatment.
However, three of four people in the mini-van, all women, were taken to Nyack Hospital with what were characterized as non-life-threatening injuries: one 42, from Massapequa and the other two 17 each, from Far Rockaway
Charges are pending the results of the investigation, Coppola said.
“It appears that the operator of the mini-van was distracted and tried to regain control of his vehicle after it was too late,” he said.
