An extradition hearing is being arranged for Kyle Copeland, 19, who was picked up in Manhattan’s Sixth Precinct this morning on drug possession charges, Leonia Police Chief Jay Ziegler said.
Police have been looking for Copeland since 11:40 a.m. Sunday morning, when, Ziegler said, a Grand Avenue resident returned home to find him ransacking his house.
The man chased the burglar out the front door and east on Vreeland Avenue, but he got away, along with jewelry and prescription medication from the man’s residence, the chief said.
The clothing was used to help a K-9 unit track their suspect, but several police agencies — including those from Palisades Park, the county sheriff’s officer and county police — had no luck, Ziegler said.
Copeland broke a rear basement window, reached inside and unlocked it to get in, the chief said.
While inside, he “took the opportunity to take a shower, opening up a new bar of soap for himself and using the residents’ towels to dry off,” Ziegler said.
In addition to the shirt and socks, Copeland left behind a fingerprint traced to him, the chief said.
