FORT LEE, N.J. -- A Fort Lee police detective with a nose for drug trafficking seized seven pounds of heroin worth $750,000 and arrested a Dominican national after a traffic stop on Route 1.
Detective T.J. Cullen stopped the northbound 2007 Toyota Camry at Hazlitt Street just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Detective Capt. Stanley Zon said.
Cullen, who is part of the department's Anti-Crime Unit, noted that the vehicle was registered to a Philadelphia man whose name the driver didn't know "although he claimed they were friends and that he was using his vehicle," Zon said.
"[The driver's] story about traveling to Trenton for short period of time was also found to be suspicious," the captain said.
While examining the vehicle, Cullen found an electronically operated hidden "trap" in the undercarriage and accessible through the center console -- the kind used to transport drugs, guns and cash, Zon said.
Inside was the heroin, he said.
The driver, 44-year-old Juan Polanco was being held on $250,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.
An investigation was continuing.
