Charles Pipitone, 47, posted $2,500 bail and was released from the Bergen County Jail just after 9 o'clock tonight following his arrest this afternoon, records show.

Officer Erik Goodell and Detective Sgt. Christopher Garris came running after a concerned resident went into headquarters around 1:30 p.m., Police Chief Thomas Rowe told Daily Voice tonight.

They took custody of the boy and arrested Pipitone after he emerged to see what the commotion was about, witnesses said.

He was charged with lewdness and child endangerment and given an Oct. 6 court date.

The charges will be referred to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office for grand jury review and possible indictment.

The Borough Council suspended Pipitone 14 months ago as part of a new background check policy established after a 3-year-old boy was molested at the borough firehouse in June 2013.

The 5-foot-8-inch, 280-pound Pipitone, a borough firefighter for nearly 20 years, was pepper-sprayed by officers from Leonia and Englewood who said he assaulted them a little over 10 years ago, records show.

While in custody, they said, he urinated from the police department holding cell.
