LEONIA, N.J. -- New Jersey State Police were searching for an SUV that took off after hitting a 25-year-old Manhattan man -- costing him parts of both legs -- as he tried to cross the New Jersey Turnpike/I-95 in Leonia before dawn Sunday.
The driver of the northbound GMC Envoy kept going after hitting Alberto Mendz near Exit 72 around 5 a.m., New Jersey State Police Trooper Alina Spies told Daily Voice.
He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center in critical condition, she said.
A semi truck driver spotted the victim and alerted police, responders said.
