Eleven people were confirmed dead Sunday morning after tornadoes and severe storms tore through the Garland, Texas area outside Dallas a day earlier.

Several victims were in cars that were blown off the highway , emergency responders reported.

There were also several reports of buildings and trailer parks being destroyed, an undetermined number of people trapped and innumerable gas leaks as fire crews continued to respond to calls.

Officials also said that west Texas and New Mexico could get up to 16 inches of snow in major blizzards.

More than 600 buildings were reported destroyed or damaged across a 20-mile stretch from an area south of Dallas to the northeastern suburbs.

Kevin Taylor, a church pastor in Glenn Heights, south of Dallas, told WFAA.com that his church collapsed around him.

"Doors began to turn inward," he said. "When I saw that I figured the glass was going to shatter and hit me in the face, so I broke and ran down the hallway and by the time I got just a few feet everything collapsed and went dark and fell on top of me.

"By the grace of God I'm here, though."

The destruction brought the death toll for the South due to recent storms to 23.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) reported two more deaths Saturday, bringing the total in that state to 10. Six fatalities were reported in Tennessee and one in Arkansas.

Dallas County is Texas's second most populous after Harris County.
