FAIR LAWN, N.J. — CLICK HERE FOR UPDATE : Fair Lawn School Admins Respond.

Students at Fair Lawn High School gathered in the auditorium Wednesday where administration called out each individual who owed lunch or book money, sources with direct knowledge of the situation told Daily Voice.

The students were told they would not be allowed to graduate until debts are paid for.

Several graduates told Daily Voice that this has been procedure at the high school for years, but feel that it could lead to bullying and that there is a "better way" to collect dues.

Other graduates felt that school officials are simply holding students accountable for their actions.

Daily Voice left voice mails and sent emails to Principal James Marcella and Interim Supt. Ernest Palestis on Wednesday.

Senior Benny Koval live-Tweeted the assembly, calling it a "name and shame." Parents told Daily Voice that Koval's tweet may have been an exaggeration of the assembly, but raised concern toward the longtime procedure and how it might negatively impact students.

"Admins say they won't graduate unless debts are covered," Koval said.

"This literally can't get any more awkward."
