PALISADES PARK, N.J. -- An off-duty Palisades Park patrol officer survived a horrific crash in which his motorcycle slammed into the back of a car stopped in the fast lane on the New Jersey Turnpike in Ridgefield, hurling him over the divider.
Officer Christopher Scilingo, a 30-year-old Morris County resident, was recovering at Hackensack University Medical Center following Sunday's crash near the southbound entrance to the Vince Lombardi Service area.
His injuries include a broken femur, a compound tibula/fibula fracture and a broken foot, colleagues told Daily Voice.
Scilingo was riding with a trio of other cyclists, including Palisades Park Police Sgt. James Rotundo, when a motorist wearing headphones stopped his car in the fast lane and got out to retrieve a chicken delivery sign that had fallen off, they said.
The patrolman was thrown over the median after his cycle clipped the rear left fender of the sedan.
The Lakewood Scoop published a dashcam video of the incident:
