Update: Son finds parents’ bodies in murder-suicide

An elderly Korean man with prostate cancer strangled his wife with a necktie, then hanged himself in their Palisades Park apartment before their son found them Monday. The 78-year-old mother’s body was on her bed and the father, 79, was hanging from an upper bathroom door hinge, apparently with the same tie, “in a position where he would have been looking at his wife while hanging,” a high-ranking official told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

A one-page suicide note, written in Korean, was found in the bathroom, the building super told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

In it, the husband “talks about his own pain and apologizes to” his son and daughter, a law enforcement official said.

The husband also asked to be cremated, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

Sun Chu Cho suffered a stroke 10 years ago and was partially bedridden, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said Monday night.

Her husband, Dae Sung Kim, recently was diagnosed with prostate cancer, the prosecutor said.

Their son told police his parents were both awake and in bed when he left their second-floor apartment on West Harriet Avenue for work at 9:40 this morning. He and his sister called home a few times and got no answer, he said, so he took a bus home, arriving at 12:45 p.m.

He let himself in, found all the lights and TV off, and then found the bodies, Molinelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. The son spent several hours speaking with detectives.
