FORT LEE, N.J. -- The Port Authority Police’s George Washington Bridge Command was honored for its members' work stopping and preventing suicides at the span.
So far this year, the command has stopped 77 attempts, compared with 16 deaths, the authority's Joseph Pentangelo said.
Vantage Health System gave the squad its Richard J. Codey Mental Health Recovery Award and the Courage and Compassion Award during a fundraiser Monday night at the Brick House in Wyckoff.
Codey, who served a brief stand-in stint as the 53rd governor of New Jersey after Jim Florio stepped down, made the presentation.
