FORT LEE, N.J. -- A Connecticut man driving an unregistered, uninsured car was drunk when he ran a red light just outside the Port Authority police building in Fort Lee, authorities said.

An officer a 2002 Honda sedan driven by Jesse Bao Clough, 24, of New Haven after he made a left through the light onto northbound Lemoine Avenue from Bruce Reynolds Boulevard near the George Washington Bridge around 3:30 a.m. Friday, the authority's Joseph Pentangelo said.

"The officer noted a strong smell of alcohol on the suspect's breath as he interviewed him," Pentangelo said. "The suspect's face was flushed and he could not provide police with a valid registration or any proof of insurance for the Honda."

Clough, who had a valid Connecticut driver's license, "was unsteady on his feet, swaying, and lost his balance," Pentangelo said.

His car was impounded and Clough was charged with DWI, refusing to take a breath test, having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle before being released to a responsible adult.
