FORT LEE, N.J. -- A suicidal man in his mid-20s who stood on the outer railing of the eastbound side of the George Washington Bridge was pulled to safety by a team of police officers around the same time Friday afternoon that the westbound side was being reopened following a tractor-trailer crash.

Port Authority, NYPD and Palisades Interstate Parkway officers converged near the New York tower as the wreckage was cleared and an oil spill cleaned up, the authority's Joseph Pentangelo told Daily Voice.

Assisted by Lt. Michael Hennessey, Port Authority Police Officer Juan Guzman ( in photo above ) convinced the Manhattan man not to jump.

Guzman is one of the department's leader in suicide rescues.

The man was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for evaluation.
