PALISADES PARK, N.J. -- A Palisades Park man assaulted a 19-year-old borough woman in Ridgefield Park, then took her cellphone when she tried dialing 911 and drove her to Fairview, where he kept her captive in his car overnight, authorities told Daily Voice.
Police were looking for the woman, whose family reported her missing, when the 911 hangup came through, Palisades Park Police Chief Ben Ramos said Sunday night.
They were still searching for her when the woman returned home just after 8 a.m. Saturday, he said.
She came to headquarters with bruises on her face, the chief said. She told police that Markell Eddie Brito, 21, had kept her in his car overnight at a Fairview parking garage, he said.
"Once we see a visible sign of injury, an arrest must be made," Ramos said.
The chief's detectives quickly found Brito and took him into custody.
Brito was being held on $75,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with kidnapping, assault and threatening harm.Ramos said he couldn't disclose the nature of the relationship between the two. He declined to elaborate.
