Jose E. Rodriguez-Peralta, 46, of Scranton, PA was wearing the attempted disguise, with lines drawn on his face, a short time later when he entered the Sunoco station on eastbound Route 46 around 8:20 p.m., police said.

A broadcast already had been issued after he’d robbed a Speedway service station on Bergen Boulevard, they told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Rodriguez-Peralta gave the Route 46 attendant a $50 bill after asking for $6 worth of gas, then tried grabbing cash from his hand, Palisades Park Police Chief Benjamin Ramos said.

The attendant pulled his hand back and shouted for the police as Rodriguez-Peralta bolted in a car that had duct tape over its name “and other identifiable features,” the chief said.

Responding officers had arrived at the station when Rodriguez-Peralta returned, apparently to retrieve his $50, Ramos said.

“There he is!” the attendant shouted, and they took Rodriguez-Peralta into custody.

Palisades Park police charged him with attempted theft before handing Rodriguez-Peralta over to Fort Lee police, who were processing him on more serious offenses.
