“He got over that little guardrail, put his foot on the railing [for the bridge] and jumped.”
Rosenberg told the news site he was on the upper level of the bridge, on the way from his New Jersey home to a meeting on 45th Street in Manhattan, when he looked in his rearview mirror and saw police cars coming up fast.
“The next thing I knew, the guy swerved around me and clipped the front end of my car,” Rosenberg, who works for a worldwide payment-processing company, told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “There were trucks up ahead, so he hit the brakes and kinda swerved his car sideways and jumped out.
“It happened so fast, the police had no chance to get to him,” he told the site.
The unidentified state corrections officer from Middletown, N.Y., headed toward the city after he and his wife argued over something yesterday, local police there said (See yesterday’s EXCLUSIVE STORY for more).
During his trip down, he cut off another car while pulling out of the service station on the Palisades Interstate Parkway nearest the bridge, according to PIP police. A patrol unit pulled him over on Hudson Terrace, but then he gunned his Pontiac and took off, they said. Fort Lee police joined the chase soon after.
As of noon, his body still hadn’t been recovered.
Rosenberg remained at the scene for nearly three hours, giving statements to police from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the PIP.
His ’98 Honda Civic is likely totaled, he said. Luckily, the 40-year-old father of two works from home, serving clients in several states.
“This is one time you don’t want to use that joke: You should have seen the other guy,” Rosenberg said, seriously.
