Stephen Salamak, 37, was arrested at his home Thursday by special agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and brought before a federal judge in Newark.
The judge released him on $125,000 unsecured bond, with home confinement and electronic location monitoring, Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick said.
Salamak -- who's listed on the New Jersey Department of Corrections roster as working as a senior corrections officer at East Jersey State Prison in Rahway -- "used email to seek and obtain images of child sexual abuse, including images of prepubescent children" from others, Fitzpatrick said.
He also tried to arrange to have sex with an 8-year-old girl through a person he thought was her mother -- but was actually a role-playing investigator from the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, a criminal complaint on file in U.S. District Court in Newark alleges. The undercover investigator had responded to a Craigslist ad posted by Salamak, the complaint says.
The U.S. Attorney credited special agents of ICE HSI, as well as the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Danielle Alfonzo Walsman of Fitzpatrick's Criminal Division was handling the case.
