Member of well-known Leonia family charged with sexually assaulting girl, 10

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A 45-year-old Leonia man whose family has a history of public service was arrested yesterday and charged with child sexual assault.

Kevin Van Mater was being held on $500,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail following his arrest by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit and Leonia police.

Van Mater (Facebook photo, above) was arrested after a teenager told authorities that he sexually assaulted her several years ago, when she was 10, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.

The 5-foot-10-inch, 255-pound Van Mater — who comes from a family of firefighters and police officers — is charged with two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault of a minor, one count of second-degree second assault and one count of child endangerment.
