Keane received the 2016 National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund Officer of the month award for January.
Following the Police Unity Tour on March 12, 2015, Keane and his wife boarded the last car of Amtrak train No. 188, Lyndhurst police said. After making a scheduled stop in Philadelphia, the train derailed — killing eight people and injuring more than 200 passengers, according to police.
Once the wreckage stopped, Keane evaluated himself and his fiance before leading her to safety, only to re-enter the wreckage as an identified police officer, authorities said.
Keane assisted in evacuating many people and contacted 911, providing them with a brief overview of the situation, police said.
"We are extremely proud of Officer Keane and grateful the NLEOMF chose to honor him with this prestigious award," Lyndhurst Police Department said in a social media post.
