FORT LEE, N.J. -- Port Authority police who stopped a dump truck driver for ducking an E-ZPass toll Wednesday morning on the George Washington Bridge found the owner had racked up more than $70,000 in unpaid tolls and fees, authorities said.

PAPD Officer Lionel Gonzales stopped the the 1982 Kenworth dump truck after it passed through the bridge's upper-level toll without paying just after 9 a.m., the authority's Joseph Pentangelo told Daily Voice.

A records check on the vehicle turned up more than 300 open violations totaling $36,000 in tolls and fees, he said.

Police contacted the owner, 68-year-old Heriberto Quiroz of Union City, who "had three more delinquent E-ZPass accounts that brought the total owed to over $71,000 in tolls and fees," Pentangelo said.

Quiroz was arrested on theft charges and the truck was impounded, he said.
