PAPD officers got the call from police in Newport, R.I. — along with photographs — just after midnight, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Around 7:15 a.m., they spotted Christopher Rodriguez, 22, of Newport and 20-year-old Joshua Melendez Torres of Mooresville, N.C. and took them into custody pending extradition proceedings, he said.

Both are accused of shooting a 25-year-old man in the face and chest with birdshot from a shotgun in Newport last Friday, Pentangelo said.

Rodriguez also had several outstanding warrants out of New York City, while Torres was wanted on a warrant out of North Carolina, he said.

Authorities in Rhode Island have charged both with assault with intent to commit murder, among other offenses.
