FORT LEE, N.J. -- A contractor cutting asphalt in the vicinity of Lemoine Avenue broke a water main and severed gas lines, causing flooding from Bridge Plaza South to Main Street yesterday, authorities said.
The incident happened around 10 a.m., affecting traffic for hours as crews cut utility service and worked through the day to stem water that gushed through the streets.
"They said that gas was mixing with the water, so I had to close my business," said Jimmy Choi, the owner of Plaza Diner. United Water, PSE&G, and Fort Lee police and firefighters responded.
