Firefighters and police got the unit’s female tenant and her cats safely out of the six-story brick building at 2160 Center Avenue after the fire broke out in the woman’s living room around 9:40 p.m. The blaze was brought under control in less than 40 minutes.
No serious injuries were immediately reported, although two firefighters were taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion before being released.
EMS workers evaluated a couple of residents who declined treatment. Three cats were reported dead.

Borough officials said 18 other apartments were temporarily uninhabitable.
