Exercise (Or Not) To Help Fairview Boy With Rare Aging Disease

FAIRVIEW, N.J. – You can help a 6-year-old Fairview boy with a rare premature aging disorder by selecting a specific exercise to complete in just 60 seconds during a special fundraising event this Saturday at VIP Fitness in Cliffside Park.

You choose the exercise and have friends, family or businesses sponsor you – or even sponsor yourself – to help young Diego Estrada, whose Progeria makes his body age rapidly.

The choice of exercises: pushups, burpees, or squats.

Pledges are $1 per rep.

Do 50 reps in a minute and it’s a $50 donation.

There are an estimated 350-400 children living with Progeria in 52 countries, according to progeriaresearch.org.

Diego was diagnosed early on and has been under specialists' care the past few years, including visits to Boston for experimental treatments.

The second-grader captured countless hearts while wearing police dress blues during Bergen County’s police “Chief for a Day” event in June.

Firefighters in town then named him honorary chief of Fire Hose Co. No. 1, giving Diego fire gear with his name on it and escorting him through the borough, lights flashing and sirens blaring.

Saturday’s event – sponsored by borough police and VIP – runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fitness company’s gym on Columbia Avenue off Anderson Avenue behind Scotty’s Taxi.

Fairview police and VIP ask that you share news of the event on social media -- perhaps even grab a friend to participate with you.

“If you are not the exercising type you can always make a straight up donation or sponsor a participant,” they wrote on a GoFundMe page for Diego and his family.
