Nicholas Herman
Herman, who has lived on Walnut Street in Ridgefield and 43rd Street in North Bergen, was being held on a combined $77,655 bail at the Bergen County Jail this morning.
Fort Lee police have charged him with six counts of burglary and theft each, as well as criminal mischief, hindering apprehension and injuring a police animal.
Herman, who currently lists a Bronx address, is also charged with credit card fraud and has pending charges for shoplifting and theft, both out of East Bergen, within the past 18 months, according to public records. Records show he also has failed to pay restitution for a previous crime out of Leonia (see below).
The 5-foot-11-inch Herman served 15 months of a four-year prison sentence for burglary out of Hudson County and was released in August 2007, state records show.
Several years before that conviction, Herman was enrolled in a special drug court program when police in Leonia arrested him in connection with a mugging.
Herman was one of three thugs who in October 2003 hit a Ridgefield man in the head with a bottle and took his wallet, not finding much money inside, police said. Herman later pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, spent 58 days in the county jail and was ordered to pay $3,600 in restitution, records show.
With him again in custody, investigators in Leonia and other towns along the East Bergen line are looking into possible connections to various other property crimes – home burglaries as well as vehicle break-ins – the kind that ordinarily happen around the holidays, when people aren’t around and darkness falls early (SEE: Don’t let thieves ruin your holiday).
Last week a surveillance photo was released of a man who Leonia police said took off after he triggered the alarm at a Broad Avenue house when he tried to pry open a door.
