FORT LEE, N.J. -- An ex-con being followed by Fort Lee police was chased down by their Port Authority colleagues on the Manhattan side of the George Washington Bridge.

Hearing a borough police radio transmission, PAPD officers followed a black 2009 Corvette that had been reported stolen as it passed through the bridge's upper-level toll plaza around 3:40 a.m. Thursday, the authority's Joseph Pentangelo said.

After heading into the Port Authority bus station at 179th Street, the driver -- identified as 33-year-old convicted felon Alsalik Bronson of Newark -- abandoned the vehicle on the upper bus ramp, he said.

The 6-foot-4-inch, 230-pound Bronson, who was released from prison nine months ago, tried to run but was quickly captured, Pentangelo said.

He was charged with possession of stolen property, fleeing and reckless driving and held pending possible charges out of Fort Lee.

Bronson served nearly 2½ years in state prison in New Jersey for convictions out of Passaic County (aggravated assault) and Union County (resisting arrest, receiving stolen property), records show.

He was released on Feb. 9.
