UPDATE (Wed. morning): A Fort Lee driver was upgraded to stable condition after suffering several fractured vertebrae and broken ribs in a four-vehicle evening rush-hour crash caused by a car that police told CLIFFVIEW PILOT was headed the wrong way on Bergen Boulevard in Palisades Park.

Three others were hospitalized with less serious injuries, authorities said.

Witnesses told police the southbound car may have tried to pass another in the oncoming lane about a half-mile south of the Route 1&9 exit then swerved back, causing the chain-reaction collision that left a Mercedes on its roof in front of a local shopping center around 4:45 p.m.

“Speed was definitely a factor, along with the slippery road conditions,” Palisades Park Police Chief Benjamin Ramos told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .

The driver of that car was initially believed to be critical but was downgraded to serious pending the results of a CT scan and MRI, emergency responders initially said. Ramos this morning said she’d improved to stable.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Unit responded because of the extent of the woman’s injuries. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification also collected evidence while New Jersey State Police helped divert traffic.
