The officer notified his colleagues that Rashawn Vaughan, 20, and Thomas Hansen, 23, of Passaic were walking along Jefferson Street near Fritch Avenue on Thursday, “pulling on car door handles in an attempt to find unlocked vehicles,” Police Chief Thomas Nielsen said.

They got into at least one, from which they took cash and loose change, he said.

When patrol officers pulled up, the pair bolted into a backyard in Wood-Ridge, the chief said.

The K-9 was summoned, a perimeter was established with the help of Wood-Ridge police, and the men were caught soon after, Nielsen said.

A judge ordered both Vaughan, who was wanted on a pair of outstanding out-of-county warrants, and Hansen, who had one, as well, held in the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing.

They’re charged with burglary, theft, conspiracy and resisting arrest.
