An open letter from Sheriff McGuire: Grief mixed with pride

The murder of 4 fellow officers is a tragic reminder that the field of law enforcement is dangerous. Every day, thousands of the men and women who protect our communities say farewell to those they love. For those 4 officers, Sunday was their final goodbye.

Reports indicate that Maurice Clemmons, the man whom police believe was the perpetrator behind this heinous act, has been shot and killed during a confrontation with members of the Seattle Police Department. If Mr. Clemmons is indeed behind the murder of these officers, then it would appear that he has received the justice he deserved.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Griswold, Owens, Renninger and Richards families. I hope they find the solace they seek during this difficult hour.

Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire

After more than 25 years as a police officer, I can say with certainty that it is an extremely rewarding career, one that can instill in you the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a difference in your community. But it is also an uncertain one where days filled with the mundane can serve as precursors to days filled with chaos…or worse.

On behalf of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, I again offer my condolences to the families of the slain officers.

To every officer walking the beat throughout this country I thank you for your service.

Be proud. Be vigilant. Come home.
