Teaneck Army Veteran Richard Martin Dies

PARAMUS, N.J. – U.S. Army veteran Richard O. Martin, of Paramus, died Sunday. He was 74.

Martin was born in Teaneck and raised in Ridgewood. In 1967 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and deployed to South Vietnam. He was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division and volunteered to be assigned to the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol Company attached to the division.

Martin was wounded by AK-47 fire during a mission outside Saigon. For his gallant service, he earned two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, CIB, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Good Conduct Medal.

Martin is survived by his wife Barbara, sons Daniel, Shawn and Michael, daughter-in-law Carolyn, grandsons Jake and Luke, and sister Theresa Romeo and her husband Charles.

Martin, who worked in construction, was active in the community. He served as Chapter Finance Officer for the Military Order of the Purple Heart #522, member of the Advisory Board of NJ Veterans Home at Paramus, Bergen County Veterans Advisory Council, Disabled American Veterans Chapter #32, 75th Ranger Regiment Association, Board of Directors of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #800 and Mensa International Ltd.

Martin’s family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home Inc., 13-31 Saddle River Rd. in Fair Lawn. A Funeral Mass is planned for Thursday, Sept. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Visitation RC Church, 234 N. Farview Ave. in Paramus. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.
