Leonia Police Officer, Firefighter Richard 'Dick' Quinton, 78, Dies

LEONIA, N.J. -- Longtime Leonia public servant Richard "Dick" Quinton -- a police officer for more than 25 years and a firefighter for more thn 40 -- died Wednesday. He was 78.

Born in Jersey City, Quinton served in the U.S. Marine Corps -- a tremendous source of pride for him, colleagues said.

He retired as a sergeant with the police department and was a member of PBA Locals 86 and 381.

Quinton also was an active member of the Leonia Volunteer Fire Department for more than four decades, served as a past president and treasurer of Co. 1 and received both the "Chief Donald D. Chace Honorary Chief Award" and the Knights of Columbus Shield Award.

He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, and is survived by sons Richard Quinton, Jr. and his wife, Laura, and Thomas Quinton and his wife, Tania, and daughter Debra Wright and her husband, Dwayne; along with grandchildren Stephanie, Thomas Jr., Kristyn, Taylor, Amanda, Michael, Dylan, Chace, and Avaleigh; and sisters Eileen Schlemm and Mary Cordano.

Visiting hours are from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Frank A. Patti and Kenneth Mikatarian Funeral Home, 327 Main Street, Fort Lee, opposite the public library.

A funderal Mass will leave there for an 11 a.m. Mass at St. John's R.C. Church in Leonia.

Donations may be made in Quinton's name to PBA Local 381 or Volunteer Fire Co. 1.
