“Families want to have a real Thanksgiving, so we like to add stuffing or sweet potatoes,” said organizer Bernadette Flaim.
The Scouts collected 564 bags of donated goods, surpassing their previous high of 400.
They worked in designated areas, with troop leaders following up on routes to check for any final bag donations. The Girl Scouts then managed and sorted the food at St. John's Food Pantry.
The group participates in the Scouts’ national program each year -- once Easter and again for Thanksgiving.
“It’s a wonderful way to regrow Cub Scouting," said Flaim, whose husband is a treasurer with the group and whose son became an Eagle Scout years ago. The family has been involved with the organization for the past 15 years.
"That is part of what they need to learn," she said. "It’s really about giving back to their community -- and they do it in a variety of ways. We start them at an early age."
