LEONIA, N.J. -- The Rotary Club of The Palisades -- an international organization devoted to providing humanitarian services -- recently hosted a doctor who is fighting to eradicate blindness in India.

Dr. R.V. Ramani, founder and director of the Sankara Eye Institute in Coimbatore, addressed the club at its December breakfast about his organization’s role and mission.

Doctors at the institute, he told club members, perform hundreds of free eye operations every day. To date, it has done more than 1 million such operations.

Its reputation, Ramani said, is as strong in India as the Red Cross is in the United States.

The club, which represents Edgewater, Leonia and Palisades Park, donated $1,000 in support of the eye institute’s work.
