Olympic pairs skating champion Sikharulidze turns 38 Oct. 25.

Sikharulidze was Olympic champion with partner Elena Berezhnaya in 2002; Olympic silver medalist in 1998; and 1998 and 1999 World Champion.

Sikharulidze was born in Saint Petersburg and began skating as a child after he saw a neighbor boy’s skates. He formed his championship partnership with Berezhnaya in 1996 after she suffered a serious accident when her then-partner’s skate blade sliced her skull open, leaving bone fragments in her brain.

Sikharulidze brought her back to Saint Petersburg where he stayed while she recuperated, and encouraged her back onto the ice for rehabilitation. During their competitive career, the two trained in Russia and at the Ice House in Hackensack.
