FORT LEE, N.J. — Artist Lindy Blanchard wakes up every morning and goes to bed each night with a view of the George Washington Bridge.

Honoring such a view, she created a series of paintings of the iconic landmark, which are on display at the Fort Lee Library through November.

“Almost all expansion bridges are a treat for the human eye,” the borough resident said. “But I have been inspired to paint only one expansion bridge, the George Washington.

"It was this specific bridge that brought me to a new life in Fort Lee and, so, makes a perfect metaphor for my personal world.”

Blanchard, now 72, was living in Manhattan with her teenage children when she began painting.

“I've enjoyed art,” she said. “I majored in art history and my sister and grandmother were artists and my brother is an architect. It’s just something I’ve always enjoyed.”

“I’ve been with the library since 2011 and we’ve had artists from all over Bergen County and New York," said Olga Kuharets, the library's program director. "But of course it’s more special when we have people of our community that can use the space to exhibit.”

Done mostly in oils, Blanchard’s “Portraits of the George Washington Bridge” depict the structure over the years, displaying multiple angles and views.

“For me, it is not just any handsome bridge but, rather, a meaningful personal image that tells me I am home.”
