Fort Lee Teacher Named 'Heart Of A Hero' Winner

FORT LEE, N.J. — U.S. Army 1st Lt. Debra Cho of Fort Lee was one of 10 New Jersey service members named a "Heart of a Hero" scholarship winner, First Lady Mary Pat Christie announced today.

Christie, who created the New Jersey Heroes Program, presented the 4th annual scholarship awards of $5,000 each for post-secondary education or vocational training.

“This year’s Heart of a Hero Scholarship recipients represent a diversity of professional aspirations – from urban and special education to finance and business as well as pharmacology and neuropsychology,” she said.

Cho, a biology teacher with the Teach for America program at Newark Prep Charter School, was inspired to become a leader in urban education and to help students achieve educational equality.She is currently working towards her Masters in Biology in Science Education from Montclair State University.

New Jersey Heroes showcases the positive and unique ways people and organizations are impacting New Jersey and their communities. To date 40 scholarships have been distributed.

Cho was one of two Bergen County residents to receive scholarships in this year's round.
