PALISADES PARK, N.J. -- A water marbling event this Sunday will offer the public a chance to dabble in a fine Turkish art form at the Bergen County branch of Turkish Cultural Center New Jersey.

The 5-7 p.m. event will include an Ebru class and live demonstrations by artist Dilek Demirors.

“A cultural center bonds people together," Director Yavuz Aydin said. "Socially, it’s what makes people feel connected.”

Aydin schedules and plans a variety of community engaging activities at the recently renovated, 6,000-square-foot Grand Avenue facility, which also has daycare and reception areas and lounges with library books and media.

Images of famous Turkish landmarks and paintings hang on walls. Decorative bowls are prominently displayed in cases.

For the Ebru event, Demirors will work with a liquid solution inside an open basin. Paint will be strategically added to create the design.

Artists lay a sheet of paper over it, then carefully lift it, creating bloom-like designs that are then either dried as a picture or cut down into Katre – images that are folded and glued into new design elements on a dry paper backing.

Aside from art meetups, members volunteer in the community with food drives for the needy, as well as collections of donations for Haiti and other Third World countries.

They also hold regular book clubs, business networking events, pre-Thanksgiving and Islamic socials, and annual trips at discounted rates to eastern portions of Turkey.

“The group just got back about 15 days ago from another 10-day trip,” said Aydin's assistant, Tevfik Sahin. “We have a lot of sponsors and groups that go with us.”
