Prevention Is The Best Medicine When Dealing With Lung Cancer

TEANECK, N.J. -- Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, responsible for roughly 158,000 deaths per year and approximately 224,000 new cases diagnosed annually. However, some of the harmful effects of the disease may be reduced by early detection and cancer screenings.

The first step in preventing lung cancer is proper screening, says Holy Name Medical Center.

Unsurprisingly, the leading cause of lung cancer is smoking, which accounts for roughly 80 percent of cases. However, exposure to secondhand smoke, radon, air pollution, asbestos and diesel exhaust also raises the risk of developing the disease.

In order to diagnose and treat the disease in its early stages, Holy Name Medical Center is offering low-dose CT scan lung screenings for individuals who are at risk for developing lung cancer. The painless procedure is offered to men and women between 55 and 77 years old who have no symptoms of lung cancer, are current smokers or have quit within the last 15 years, have a personal history of tobacco use or nicotine dependence and have smoked at the following levels:

  • 1 pack per day for 30 years
  • 1.5 pack per day for 20 years
  • 2 packs per day for 15 years
  • 2.5 packs per day for 12 years

A prescription from a physician is needed for the screening. For a physician referral please call 201-833-3730.

Screenings are performed during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Medical Center, located at 718 Teaneck Road in Teaneck.

Screenings are covered under most insurance plans, and for those without insurance, Holy Name offers the exam at a compassionate care rate of $50.

Call 201-833-3280 to schedule an appointment.
