FORT LEE, N.J. — Over $18,000 was raised for an 11-year-old Fort Lee girl battling leukemia at a tricky tray fundraiser at Fort Lee Recreation Center Saturday night.
"I'm speechless," said Yanine Lopez, mother of Briana, who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on January 14. "It is really touching that everybody has done this for my daughter."
160 people attended the fundraiser, including dozens of teachers and faculty from Briana's school and Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich.
"This is precisely the type of event that defines Fort Lee," Sokolich told Daily Voice. "It is incredible to live in a community that does something like this for somebody."
The fundraiser was organized by Lopez' former tutor and School No. 4 Third Grade Teacher Rachel Ventrella.
"Nights like this, I am reminded of how much my community can come together to help one in need," Ventrella told Daily Voice. "The show of love for Briana from my neighbors and community make me feel proud and blessed."
