LEONIA, N.J. -- The Presbyterian Church in Leonia is sponsoring a Japanese, Korean and American garage sale to raise funds for the children of Uganda on Saturday, May 21.

"Uganda has suffered severe trouble due to war and AIDS," organizers note. "Many children have lost parents and cannot attend school due to the cost, and many do not have things we consider basic in the United States, such as shoes."

Representatives from the church have traveled to Uganda in summers past. They saw firsthand how much good relatively small donations could do for orphans in Africa who don't have parents to buy them even basics like socks and sweaters. They also "watched as children danced around their mosquito nets, making up songs about how they would never get malaria again."

Visit the Children of Uganda website, here, for pictures and more information about the organization. Last year the church raised over $2,000 for this cause.

Sellers at the sale will donate all or a portion of their sales toward the fundraiser. The money raised will be used for school supplies, clothes, mosquito nets for the children, medicines and more. There is no fee to attend.

The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, in the front parking lot of the Presbyterian Church in Leonia, 181 Fort Lee Rd. Beverages will be available for sale all day.
